During the 1990’s the public interest in ‘magick’ and the ‘occult’ doubled – if not tripled or even quadrupled, exponentially rising to new heights that few could have anticipated. The amount of “New Age” material being published soared – the companies and creators that produced them had the ability to, for the first time in contemporary history, develop significant and legitimate income based on the “New Age.”
Now, someone reading this is going to quickly argue about all of the developments that they may have experienced in the 1960’s, and further still, we have the blossoming of occult lodges that became publicly visible during the turn of the 20th century – factions such as the Golden Dawn and hermetic schools of Theosophy that are now over 100 years old in their founding. I am certainly not going to deny the existence of these things – but lets face it, the occult revival has only just recently passed its infancy, and that is why it has had so many growth spurts, though it still exists to simply test its own limits and get a feel for its skin… While this is all changing now, existing in an ever-shifting face of reality.
I appeared on the “New Age” scene, however much ‘underground’ in 1995 as “Merlyn Stone.” As I have explained to others and in my recent autobiographical narrative, Nabu Speaks!, the name was chosen for personal reasons and not as a tribute to the female author (Merlin Stone) of whom I had not even heard of at that time.
The name “Merlyn” is not really a proper name, although it has been used to refer to particular figures (or a figure) in history, it is actually a title – a Welsh title – that can be best equated to what you might know as a seer or prophet. The contemporary reader may be more familiar with the Judeo-Christian religious context of the title, which in Hebrew is nabih, derived from the Babylonian name: Nabu.
I prefer the semantic of the seer, because to the modern mind, this idea of “prophet” is probably going to be lost on people – raising defenses unnecessarily and causing the messages to be lost. For that matter, I would prefer the concept of a messenger who is simply carrying a certain message as opposed to a prophet who is privy to unique and secret information that no one else is in possession of. While the later may be true to a certain extent, such might also apply to all people and times.
During only the three decades of my current existence in the physical realm I have watched as “crystal healers” went from working in basements in the 1980’s to having fully leased and store-fronted offices. I have watched as the thousands who once only reserved themselves to secluded monthly meetings and the study of books in closets by candlelight now wear their full regalia in public places reserved for large festivals and parades.
Don’t get me wrong – I understand that many of you have endured suffering still to this day for your inclinations toward a “mystical,” “occult” or otherwise “pagan” living philosophy. There are still more who are unable to exist in this freedom I have just described, worried for the very real repercussions and animosity that can come from work or family – lives in this system can be lost or laid to ruin. Believe me, I fully understand. But… times are changing still.
The height of the 1970’s and early 1980’s really paved the way – cushioning the societal blow that comes with large ‘paradigm-shifts’. Among these was, of course, the Simon Necronomicon that appeared in 1977, the same year as Star Wars and the birth of the Shannara epic by Terry Brooks.
Mainstream consciousness was being upgraded, and with it the guise was usually always something other than what it appeared to be. This is often the case in the ‘material realm’. While there were the more obvious introductions of semantics born from Dungeons and Dragons, and related fantasy enthusiasm, the children of the 80’s were also being prepped – their minds opened to new realms of possibility that were veiled in the paradigms of their parental generations. In the introduction to the original edition of Wizardry — Merlyn’s Magick (2005) — I refer to the mystical and magical themes coming into focus with the cult interest in such aspects as The Dark Crystal, Care Bears, Labyrinth and the like. While an entire book could be (and probably has) been written on the contributions of the psychedelic new age ‘hippie’ towards this change in consciousness, it will suffice for our purposes of its mere mentioning here.
As far as I could observe, however, it was 1995 that provided the largest shift. I took a step back, observing the wide-angle, and I saw the prominence of the newly released motion picture “The Craft” coupled with Sabrina the Teenage Witch as the featured ‘after-school-special’ of the day. Clearly the coast was clear and it was time to come out – come awake!
While I was not alone in hearing this ‘call’, the work I had to do – the program I was here to follow – was not something readily understand-able to the population – even a “New Age” one. The plans were laid before I ever showed up in this life, but patience was key as was watching for the signposts and keeping my head down. It was going to take everything to bring the work to the heights it can now be found in, but in the 1990’s, the world was not ready for what I had to say concerning the origins of ‘magick’ and the “mardukite” legacy, so I had to start at the beginning – to build a basis – to work from the foundation rock or stone.
All of my original ‘writings’ related to the occult field were actually the subject of ‘in-house’ materials being prepared for working groups and research oriented studies that I was person-ally involved with – and often the ‘founder’ of. I began this work publicly in 1995 and it has now been over 15 years since – half of my current existence. It has taken many forms, though it was easiest for me to begin with that which would be most familiar to my target demographic: esotericists, occult practitioners and the up and coming alien youth that usually had inclinations toward the “New Age” naturally.
In 1995, the world was not ready for Mardukites. I worked within the paradigms that were much more accessible and did not require a lot of background – ritual magick, spellcraft, high psychology and even the ceremonial systems. The two methodologies I was most concerned with in connecting the later work I had hoped to accomplish (now known as the Mardukites) was the Pheryllt Druid material of Douglas Monroe and also “Simon’s” Necronomicon.
This was about as close as I could come to ‘mainstream’, and even these facets of the “New Age” had been enshrouded in misguided controversy and restricted recommendations from the more publicly elite and visible organizations and group leaders. “Members” were explicitly told not to look into these materials, just as much as the current Mardukite work has seen its share of scrutiny and disapproval from the uninitiated. It came as no surprise then that the only work I had done during this period that survived in the mainstream was probably the most ‘commercially’ viable of the “Merlyn Stone” titles and that is the Sorcerer’s Handbook., now celebrating its 13th anniversary in circulation across 8 editions not including the 2005 release of Merlyn’s Magick, of which it was the basis.
